The University of Alexandria mourned with grief the death of the Egyptian peerless Nobel-winning chemist / Ahmed Zewail who dead in the USA after a long illness, and the entire world is grieved over losing one of the hardworking pioneering scientist who left the humanity a huge heritage of scientific discoveries.

God have mercy on the deceased soul rest in peace and his usefulness as far as to humanity of beneficial knowledge, and inspired his family and his family and colleagues and disciples and loved ones in Egypt and throughout the world at large, patience and fortitude.

In our prayers, we ask that God grant him eternal rest and we called upon youth to follow in his footsteps to benefit the human race.

A delegation of Alexandria University visited Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport City – USA. The delegation was led by Dr. Esam El Kurdy the university vice president Community Service and Environment Development and included Dr. Abdel Aziz Konswa, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Dr. Ismail Gomaa, the former Dean of the Faculty of Commerce. This center is the fruit of cooperation between four universities in Virginia; University of Christopher-Newport, Old Minan University and the College of William & Mary and the Norfolk State University.

The delegation was accompanied by Dr. Tarek Abdul Fattah, the Professor at the University of Christopher Newport and the Director of the university laboratories in Jefferson center and Dr. Charles Reyes, chief scientist of the Center. The delegation inspected scientific instruments in the field of nuclear accelerators and how it is manufactured.

Also, the delegation visited the Center for Applied Researches and the laboratory of nanotechnology researches on applications of solar cells, water and hydrogen production reactors. The delegation also visited a company that produces boron titanium nitride nano tube.

It is worth to note that the substance of boron titanium nitride nano tube has many applications such as connectors, insulation and water desalination. It was also agreed to activate the cooperation between the company and

Alexandria University to use company products in various research areas in Alexandria University, in particular water desalination field.

Konswa, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering visited Christopher Newport University to discuss joint cooperation and establishment of Study Programs to qualify students for creativity and innovation. They were met by Prof. Dr. Tarek Abdul Fattah, the Professor at Christopher Newport University who was awarded by NASA and has 10 patents in Nano-technology and its applications in water and energy.

Also a meeting was held attended by Deans of faculties of Commerce and Science to review the idea of Christopher Newport University based on studying some courses in different disciplines for three semesters then the student should decide his future field. The university adopts the idea of direct relation between the student and professor and depends on education of 25 students in average.

Another meeting also held with the Rector to discuss the scientific cooperation between the Christopher Newport University with China, Germany and Ireland for students exchange and the possibility to apply the same experiment with Alexandria University in addition to establishment of joint programs in the area of applied environmental sciences and engineering management. The delegation took a tour in university buildings and laboratories on 26 acres at a cost of about 1.3 billion $.

A meeting was had with a group of researchers in the field of water technology and wetland technic used in environment protection against pollutants.

 

Dr. Roshdy Zahran, the President of Alexandria University will meet the second group of university camp at 7:00 Pm on Sunday 7th of August 2016. The group consists of 220 students from different faculties of the university. The camp will be held till Thursday in the University City in Smouha.

Dr. Hisham Gaber, the Vice President of University for Education and Students Affairs pointed out that the camp aims at providing suitable

environment for the students to practice activities, exchange experiences and to meet the university and political leaderships.

 

The Community Service and Environment Development Council during its session held under chairmanship of Dr. Essam El-Kurdi, mourned the great scientist Dr. Ahmed Zewail as one of Egypt sons and one notable graduate from the Faculty of Science, Alexandria University. Dr. Zewil was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1999 for his researches on the femtosecond chemistry. He enriched the scientific life and the whole world by his researches. The Council observed a minute of silence in memory of the late Dr. Zewil.

The Council reviewed the medical convoys organized by the sector during this period inside and outside Alexandria with participation of the faculties of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine and Dentistry and the Institute of Medical Research and the Higher Institute of Public Health. The convoys shall provide medical services and examinations to raise the medical level and preparing a young and effective staff aware of their community role.
