Ibrahim Youssef Abounafe, a student at the Faculty of Agriculture (Saba Basha), Alexandria University, won second place in Alexandria Governorate in the fourth edition of the National Initiative for Smart Green Projects 2026. His project was also selected among the top 10 projects nationwide.

Prof. Dr. Ahmed Adel Abdel Hakim, Acting President of Alexandria University, congratulated the student on this achievement, praising his innovation and the university’s commitment to supporting student projects that promote sustainability and serve the community.

The project focuses on recycling local agricultural waste to produce natural, chemical-free preservation capsules that absorb ethylene gas and excess moisture and inhibit mold growth, extending the shelf life of fruits and vegetables and reducing agricultural waste. It also integrates biotechnology and artificial intelligence with smart sensors based on the Internet of Things (IoT), enabling packing stations and exporters to monitor shipment quality and freshness in real time, thereby improving supply chain efficiency and enhancing the competitiveness of Egyptian agricultural exports.
