
In light of the growing attention to mental health issues among young people, and under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Ahmed Adel Abdel Hakim, Acting President of Alexandria University, the University organized an awareness seminar entitled: “Depression and Suicidal Thoughts: Between Reality and Support”, as part of its efforts to promote mental health awareness and support youth.
The seminar was delivered by Dr. Sahar Sherif, Executive Director of the Unit for Combating Violence Against Women, and Dr. Jehan Shafik, Acting Head of the Psychology Department at the Faculty of Arts. They addressed the psychological and social dimensions associated with depression, clarifying the differences between temporary sadness and clinical depression.
They also discussed the causes of suicidal thoughts from various psychological and social perspectives, as well as appropriate support mechanisms and ways to التعامل effectively with such cases.
The seminar also highlighted the importance of psychological containment, active listening, family and social support, and the role of educational institutions in providing a safe environment that contributes to prevention and early intervention.
It emphasized that seeking psychological help is a sign of awareness and strength, not weakness.
Furthermore, the seminar stressed the importance of enhancing community awareness of mental health and increasing knowledge of support mechanisms and ways to التعامل with different psychological conditions, contributing to building a safer and more supportive university environment.
The seminar witnessed notable attendance from students and faculty members, who enriched the discussion with their valuable contributions.
