On Thursday the 16th of November 2023, Professor Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa, President of Alexandria University, witnessed the opening of the activities of the 26th Annual International Conference on Oncology and Nuclear Medicine at Alexandria University (ACOD 2023). The opening ceremony was attended by Dr. Hussein Khaled, Professor of Oncology at the National Cancer Institute and former Minister of Education, Dr. Ali Abdelmohsen, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Acting Vice President of the University for Education and Student Affairs, Dr. Yousry Rostom, Head of the Department of Oncology and Nuclear Medicine and Chairman of the Conference, Dr. Abdelaziz Ali El-Turki, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Rawabi Holding Group, Dr. Mustafa El-Serafi, Professor of Medical Oncology at the National Institute of Oncology and President of the Egyptian Cancer Society, Dr. Enas Abdelhalim, Professor of Oncology at Mansoura University and member of the Egyptian House of Representatives, Dr. Abbas Omar, Professor of Oncology and Nuclear Medicine and honorary president of the conference, and Dr. Azza Darwish, Professor of Oncology and Nuclear Medicine and secretary of the conference, in addition to a group of researchers and specialists in the field of Oncology treatment and nuclear medicine.

In his speech, Dr. Abdelaziz Konsowa thanked the participants in this conference, the experts and professors of oncology and nuclear medicine, who came from various countries of the world to present their experiences, disseminate their knowledge, and contribute to advancing the scientific research process at Alexandria University to global horizons in the field of oncology treatment. He also thanked civil society organizations and businessmen for their unlimited support for Alexandria University Hospitals, pointing to the value of donations made by civil society organizations to university hospitals in Alexandria, to contribute to performing their mission as desired and providing the best decent medical services to the public. Dr. Konsowa emphasized the importance of the conference to come up with effective recommendations that contribute to the development of oncology treatments and access to the latest scientific developments in the field of oncology to alleviate the suffering of patients visiting Alexandria University hospitals.
While Dr. Ali Abdelmohsen indicated that the Department of Oncology and Nuclear Medicine is one of the most active departments in the Faculty of Medicine at Alexandria University, given the vital role that the department plays in treating cancer patients and developing scientific research related to cancer treatment, stressing that this conference is the 26th conference for the department, which confirms the long history of this department, and indicates its inclusion of a group of Egyptian scientists in the treatment of oncology and nuclear medicine.

While Dr. Yousry Rostom presented the most important achievements of the Oncology Department during the year 2023, stressing that the PET-CT imaging device had been received, installed, and operated, the brachytherapy room was prepared and the device was operated to begin receiving and treating patients, in addition to participating in presidential initiatives for early detection and treatment of breast cancer. Dr. Rostom pointed out that more than 2,000 women were examined, and more than 350 patients were treated during the initiative. He added that the conference includes 19 scientific sessions covering the latest in radiation therapy, breast cancer treatment, modern targeted and immunological drugs, digestive system cancer, colon and anal cancer, lung and prostate tumours, and urinary system tumours. It also includes sessions on gynaecological tumours and everything that is modern in the treatment of blood diseases and palliative treatment and care, as well as sessions for clinical pharmacy and nursing in oncology treatment. A general symposium on how to deal with oncology patients and their families will be held under the auspices of the Alexandria Oncology Foundation to support and aid cancer. Lectures and discussions will be given by 73 of the world’s leading oncology and nuclear medicine scientists, in addition to holding 18 symposiums to discuss everything new in modern medications and their results.
